UCL Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has existed since 1994, but its origins date back over 250 years and lie in the history of various individual hospitals, some of which now form part of the Trust and some of which have since closed down.
University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH), situated in the heart of London, is one of the most complex NHS Trusts in the United Kingdom, serving a large and diverse population. In July 2004, we were one of the first NHS Trusts to be granted Foundation Trust status.
We provide academically led acute and specialist services, both locally and to patients from throughout the United Kingdom and abroad. We balance the provision of highly rated specialist services with providing acute services to the local populations of Camden, Islington, Westminster and the City of London.
We have a turnover of £632 million and contracts with more than 150 Primary Care Trusts to provide services. We treat over 500,000 outpatients appointments and admit 100,000 patients each year. We employ 6,000 staff and are a major teaching centre offering training for nurses, doctors and other health care professionals
The hospitals which make up UCLH are:
- University College Hospital, incorporating the new Elizabeth Garrett Anderson wing that opened in 2008
- Eastman Dental Hospital
- Hospital for Tropical Diseases
- National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery
- UCH at Westmoreland
- The Royal London Homoeopathic Hospital
We have an international reputation and a tradition of innovation. Operational from September 2008, UCL Partners was created, bringing together five of Britain's world renowned medical research centres and hospitals: UCL (University College London); Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust (GOSH): Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust; the Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust; and, University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Alongside our relationship with the world-leading medical school of UCL (the Royal Free and University College Medical School), we enjoy close links with London South Bank and City universities offering high quality training and education.
We are committed to being environmentally aware and proactively participate in the delivery of sustainable developments.
The Board of Directors is chaired by the UCLH Chairman who also chairs the Governing Body.
UCLH has 33 Governors on its Governing Body made up of patients, staff, local public and partner organisations. 23 of these Governors are elected by the Foundation Trust membership which at 1 April 2009 totalled 14,000.
